Custom Furniture
Time for some traditional woodworking due to the COVID slowdown.

Then COVID hit and the world ground to a halt. With the pandemic raging on and outbreak fear freezing event professionals in their tracks, the shop has been beyond slow. But with a slow shop comes free time, time that can be spent exploring new ideas and honing practical skills. I used the time to turn construction grade pine lumber and scrap around the shop from cancelled builds into a full set of furnishings for the apartment I’ve been spending way too much time in. Almost all of the pieces I’ve made use traditional dowel joinery and glue. No screws or nails. The larger pieces are all divided into parts secured together with bolts so they can be easily broken down and moved…and so one person can get them up three flights of stairs without dying.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1612902282276{margin-top: 15px !important;margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]Custom Couch
This 8 foot wide couch is made of several parts bolted together to make the whole. Pine 2×4’s make up the structure while 1×5’s and webbing support the foam cushions.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”2395,2396,2392,2397,2399,2398,2403,2400,2401,2402,2405,2404,2393,2394″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1612902296969{margin-top: 15px !important;margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]
Custom Bed Frame
I liked my old bed frame but it sat a bit low for my taste…so I built a new one. This one, like the couch, is made of multiple parts constructed of 2×4’s and 1×6 panels with bolts to hold the parts together. I learned from the couch though and all of the bolts use t-nuts hidden in the legs making assembly much easier (and less parts that can be lost). I replaced the Ikea style slats with two grids made from scrap boards in the shop.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”2377,2378,2379,2380,2381,2382,2375,2376,2383″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1612902306867{margin-top: 15px !important;margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]
Custom Tables
I made two bedside tables, an end table for my couch, and a coffee table. All feature a lower shelf suspended between the side supports. The tops and shelves are made from 1×6 boards, the uprights are 2×4’s split down to 2×2’s, and the cross supports are scrap 1×3’s. All of them except the coffee table also feature a power strip mounted to the underside to cut down on cable spaghetti.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”2421,2417,2422,2418,2410,2411,2412,2413,2419,2414,2420,2415,2416″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1612902319344{margin-top: 15px !important;margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]
Custom Bookcase
This 4 shelf bookcase I made entirely from 1×4’s left over from a cancelled project at the start of 2020. The unique thing about the boards, they were originally 16 foot boards made up of many smaller boards glued together with finger joints resulting in an interesting, piecemeal look. I used over 100 dowels to hold the unique shape together.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”2391,2385,2384,2386,2387,2388,2389,2390″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1612902328750{margin-top: 15px !important;margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]
Custom Bar Stools
The first barstool I made was an exploration of the idea and resulted in a stool that was a bit too large. So, I revisited the idea and made two more that were better sized. I also angled the lower cross supports for a more unique look and to make a more comfortable foot rest. The tops are made using leftover foam from the couch and are held on using pocket screws hidden underneath.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”2406,2407,2408,2409″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row]
